A look into Dragon Empires
Dragon Empires, a MMORPG that has the look of your typical magic/hack and slash game on the surface, is a more complex game then what one would at first think. Trying to find what sets this game out from other titles that are on the brink of release, I was able to persuade Peter Tyson, Community Liaison Manager of Dragon Empires, to answer a few questions for me.

That whole Pre-Order Thang...
UbiSoft has updated the main page for Shadowbane news, detailing the information from last week that caused quite the uproar on restricted races available to those who preorder the game from participating retailers.

It even comes with a handy updated FAQ which clarifies that the suggested retail price for the game is not $10.00 U.S. but the pre-order price that will be discounted from the full price of the game when orders arrive. Kinda like a deposit. According to the hidden blurbage it now looks like Shadowbane will be out in N O V E M B E R of this year. Just in time for Christmas sales. How sweet.

From Camp Earth and Beyond...
From Earth and Beyond we get word that they have updated their weekly "Glimpse Inside" articles, this being the second of two parts detailing their plans on the customer support system.

If you have not signed up for beta, well they want you to:
We are also encouraging players to sign up for our ongoing stress testing and upcoming beta testing, if they haven't done so already. The sign-up for testing is located here.
Meanwhile, they have yet to address any of the questions players to be have asked regarding the founder's program, here - here - or here. We mailed Arcturus similar questions on the subject, and well... we did not get a response either. We're sure he is looking into it though and will respond as soon as he has more information. Must be the marketing folks at EA, and everyone knows that marketing suits at publishers just suck.

In Shadowbane News…
In Shadowbane news, the marketing promotion that was offering the three restricted races (unlocked) if you pre-ordered your game copy through EBWorld has been pulled. J from Shadowbane WarCry asked the Asian Publisher of Shadowbane, En-Tranz, if they would be offering similar promotions as the one UbiSoft is having. Kegien the Community Manager there replied, ”The Asia-Pacific version of Shadowbane will not be marketed this way. This is Ubi Soft's call alone.”

In other Shadowbane news they have a new beta journal up to whet your attitude to crush titled The Reconstruction.

UO: Red Wipe & BYF!
In the fine tradition of being a day late and a dollar short, Ultima updated the FYI page explaining that the one time wipe of murder counts to all players was to resolve a bug issue with the epic spawn of the Harrower creature that was giving murder counts to player's it killed. They tell us:
The decision was made to issue a reprieve, and it was done. This reprieve is granted to each character as they enter Britannia—as each character logs into UO, all of that characters short- and long-term murder counts will set to zero. This reprieve will only happen once per character.
It was also preplanned not to let everyone know in advance to curb the massive red-fest that would of followed:
Once this decree was made, we concluded it was best to not make a formal announcement until the reprieve was activated on all shards, for fear of unscrupulous people taking this opportunity to enter killing frenzies on multiple shards, anticipating that at the end of the day their murders would essentially have zero repercussions.
Thanks for keeping the players up to date on what the hell was going on. At least they gave an apology and fixed the spawn.

Hey ever wanted to play Ultima with your bud's, but did not want to pay for it? Ultima, trying to get new players is following the lead of other games, and is offering a "Bring a Buddy Package." 1) You must have an active account, 2) Your buddy must remain active for at least 90 days and 3) Your buddy must submit your e-mail addy as the person who referred you to the game.

SW:G Pay to Play…
I missed this the other day, falling into the Pay to Play category Kevin "Q3PO" O'Hara, the Community Relations Manager for Star Wars: Galaxies made an announcement on the boards regarding Beta CD's.

This weekend they are testing the burning equipment and if all goes well CD's will be going out to phase one tester's. Now, the kicker is there will be a charge of $5.95 for these CD's. The charge is to cover the costs of burning, printing, shipping and for testing of the billing system. Before everyone gets into a fit over this, I have to agree that nothing is actually wrong with this. Compare it to other games. How many folks have played Ultima? You bought the game and maintain an account monthly. Same for EverQuest, Asheron's Call, World War 2 Online, and Anarchy Online. You essentially paid full retail, plus subscription to Beta Test games that were supposedly ready for the market.

Those who pay are the players we want testing as they will be dedicated to the game by showing their loyalty for the game with each phase of testing, because they won't pay again if it is the suck, yes?

Discuss: It's just another way of cashing in on the name.

Sims Online Poll?
In case your lucky enough not to be on this email list, Stratics is mass mailing surveys and masking it for EA to point to the Sim's Game. Stratics sends this mail titled MMORPG Survey from Stratics, within they write:
Dear Stratics Reader,

A company currently building a new MMORPG wants to know what you think about a few things. This is your chance to let the game developers know what you want and what you don't want in a game. Because you're a Stratics reader, they value your opinion, so please stop by and give it to them.

To fill out the survey CLICK HERE:

http://ea.inquisiteasp.com/surveys/UZC8ND

Thanks!
The Stratics Staff
The link takes you to an EA site, where you have the 20 odd questions as a gamer, and end's in a redirect to The Sim's Online. No free beta reward ot anything. That sucks. I tried the test 3 times, and with varied answers, ya'd think that at least it would offer other games based on your choices and with one question inside about Earth and Beyond.

Blah.

One Time Reprieve x2
In a case of "WTF HAPPENED," players are logging into UO to find out that the murder count's they have accumulated are... GONE! Planned Feature silently unleashed or a screw-up by OSI, no one knows but everyone is demanding to know. In the wake of this so far, some guilds have quit enmasse.

Over on Pacific shard, currently if you kill someone and log out the count is removed, while on other shards they are sticking. Siege, known to be the PvP shard where Red's had a place to play all lost their counts as well. For most, this was a symbol of pride!

One GM is quoted as saying, "This was intentional." OSI/EA has yet to respond on the (need a game account to read) official-boards.

Some are speculating that due to the Harrower spawn giving murder counts to players, the safest thing for OSI was to remove the murder system outright for now. If your on one of the EU servers, get on your local boards as the PK fest run is being planned now.

As the bubble breaks... more
As more and more web-sites are starting to get into web broadcasting word has it that the first of the internet radio stations has gone for bust signing off to the tune of "Happy Trails." How is this news? Well if your a gamer, like most of us, you probably turn your game music off after hearing it for the hundreth time and start up a media player tuned to your favorite station.

As a gamer, I listen to X-treme Gaming Radio the site by Paligap that is "The Internet's FIRST 24/7 Radio Station For Gamers" so I had to ask Paligap what the deal was and how all of this will affect not only us the listeners, but the broadcasters.

ThunderboxPC Review...
Unknown Player has a review posted about ThunderboxPC. I've been telling folks I know that if you want a great rig at an affordable price, to go here. Compare prices to a Dell and see what you can get for either the same amount of cash or less with a Thunderbox.

In the review Diamonds writes:
Here's the best part, he asked me what my budget was. I replied and told him. His next reply was "here's the computer I can make you with that much of a budget." How wonderful was that? It was so simple. All I did was say "I have $xx dollars to spend" and I got a reply saying what kind of machine I could get with that. It was like entering the amount into a machine, the Thunderbox machine.
Check the review for the full skinny and then go get yourself a ThunderboxPC you will not be sorry.

This is for you, the fan-base!
"Pay to Crush," is becoming the new signature of disgruntled fanbois of Shadowbane over the news announcing those who pre-order Shadowbane from a participating retailers will get the three restricted races unlocked for play. No epic quest at game launch and no truly unique players that have participated over time and were rewarded with a restricted race. No, just go purchase it. Ebay sales are going to be huge as players hit the soft caps quick with these races while others are locked out.

Vosx taking a break from his North American tour returned to the melting pot of disgruntled folks posting that if you truly love Shadowbane and want to see it succeed you will help feed the hype machine, by showing bottom dollar pre-sales so that the game is available, everywhere. Clarifications are pending with more announcements regarding this planned for Monday next week.

Priest Interview on Gamers Click...
The newest MMORPG game in development "Priest" a type of gothic horror Wild West game similar in style to the paper game "Deadlands" rpg has an interview with Jason Kim of JC Entertainment on Gamers Click.

In the interview they ask some basic questions as, "You claim to be creating an entirely new genre but the game currently looks like it is nothing more than a massively multiplayer shooter/role-playing title. What are we missing?"

If you have not seen this game yet, this is what the market needs. What we don't need is another Sword and Sorcery title, or another Space Opera, but a western theme MMOG. Check the interview as it's rather short and the folks doing it don't seem to familiar with MMOG's.

Time for Online Games to Team Up
Trey Walker (Platform Editor) over at GameSpot say's in this article that it's "Time for Online Games to Team Up." In his rant/write he think's that in three or four years from now we'll even remember half of the massively multiplayer games that are currently in development even with the projected growth estimates in the online game community.

He cites a few examples of games that just don't cut it, and how in the end only a few dominant titles will emerge from the upcoming flood we will see in the market.

Give it a read.

City of Hero's: The Vanguard
City of Hero's has an update for organizations on the creation of the Vanguard. Learn how the Rikti invasion fostered the creation of the Vanguard - a crime-fighting organization above and beyond individual nations, dedicated to fighting any alien or super-powered force intent on bearing humanity ill will!
Although the Rikti Invasion began (and apparently ended) in Paragon City, it was a worldwide crisis. The menacing extra-dimensional armies struck across the globe. At first, heroes, soldiers, and citizens in each nation fought the aliens individually as best they could. NATO had no contingency plan for dimensional portals opening up in the hearts of its capital cities. Those first few weeks were utter chaos as the world fought to hold on against the technologically superior Rikti. Only through the efforts of super powered individuals and hero organizations like the Freedom Phalanx, did humanity manage to bring to a halt the invaders' early advances.

EQ goes RTS and MAC OS
Sony released a press release which can be found over on IGN stating that EverQuest will become a 'real time strategy' game port as well as a console based version of EQ as they further expand into the alternate gaming markets. Snippets from the release state:
Rapid Eye Entertainment is currently developing a real-time strategy, PC-based EverQuest game while Snowblind Studios is developing an EverQuest-based product for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Further product information will be announced at a later date.
Also released yesterday was another press release stating that EverQuest will soon be making a move to support the Mac OS sometime in 2003.
"Supporting the Mac platform is a logical step towards growing our online community and building the most complete, interactive experience for gamers," said Scott McDaniel, Vice President of Marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "Combine the power and stability of Mac OS X with Apple's outstanding desktop systems and you've got an incredible gaming environment that'll take full advantage of EverQuest's huge and seamless 3D world."
Mac users are finally getting some love, largely neglected for the past several years in the MMOG market.

The Age of Shadows...
Don't I feel like an ass? Just the other day I was commenting upon how Ultima Online was becoming a dead product. We as players know it. UO probably knows it as well. Figure I still have Blackthorn's Revenge sitting in an unopened box next to my PC, publish 16 has been a dismal failure, and no new products have been announced when 'lo and behold,' word comes of an expansion.

The Age of Shadows expansion (due out in 2003) will finally give us Necromancy (little late) and Paladin professions (Is this a fixed Hero/Evil system) as well as a new land mass and the option for those who own homes a 'Home building tool.' The home building tool will allow players to revamp their current home, or build new buildings from scratch in a design layout of your choice. Is this the seekrit project that OSI and our hero's of days long gone, have been working on?

A date with Shadowbane...
Aside from the rumors running around as of late that UbiSoft testers are violating the NDA posting screenshots, reviews, and sharing of Shadowbane Beta accounts (negatively), a real release date seems to be October 29,2002 (Thanks WarCry!) as pre-orders are again on EBGames with a price of 39.99 with some folks just not having much positive things to say.
-if you work 9 to 5 this will not be a game for you.if you have a family this is not the game for you.if you hate pvp this is not game for you.if you looking for the next good looking graphics this is not the game for you.if you are an occasional gamer and can't spent more then 4 hours a day online.there is room for the casual if you like living in grief though.

-I know they promise us some polishing, but this game is suppose to be released in less than half a year, and those graphics lack horribly.

-this is nothing but a gank fest. Plain and simple. I know exactly how this game is going to turn out.

-if they do offer so much control as they say to plaers hardocre players will run this game and leave casual players to do as hardcore players make not what they want.
So much negativity from folks who have yet to even try the game. A few educated and well written postive comments were posted as well in the defense of the game to come.

Meanwhile, Arcadian DelSol has not one, but six comments on how the box art sucks and they used quotes from.."Daily Radar, an online game fluffing website that fell off of planet Earth.com almost two years ago."
