Previews: The 4th Coming
Developer: Vircom Interactive Publisher: Vircom Interactie Genre: Fantasy Released: 09/28/98 Advancement System: Class/Levels/Skills Player vs. Player Combat: Yes Competitors: Meridian 59, Rubies of Eventide, The Realms, Ultima Online. "Do you fell worthy, punk?" There was a time long ago when Elves wandered the world in great numbers, when their achievements outshone even the brightness of the sun, when human and dwarven civilizations were still in their infancies. There was a time of legends and heroes, of incredible accomplishments and great deeds, a time when the world knew true grandeur. That time is long gone, however, crushed under the heel of fate and decay. The Elves are gone, now, victims to their own delusions. They failed to heed the warnings of the Harbinger, the one who came to warn them… He arrived on the night the moons and the Centaur constellation were aligned, several millenia ago, his appearance foul and nightmarish, and warned all who would listen of the impending doom that lay ahead. He issued warnings and prophecies, but the Elves had grown vain and arrogant, and heeded him not. The Harbinger left, promising to return when the time would be right again.
With support for a quest system, Quests found in The 4th Coming will range from the easy errands such "as fetch this and that and bring it to me" to more difficult quests that will require that you use both brains and your brawl. Quests are usually initiated by a NPC or a game operator can create them. Also, some quests are directly connected to the storyline of The 4th Coming. Adventuring in the world of Althea one can encounter roughly 30 different types of monsters. Out of them, many other monsters can be created. For instance, a goblin warlord and a goblin warrior do have the same appearance but very different statistics. Hosting over 200 unique NPCs, 100 different monsters, half a dozen large cities, 1000 objects, more than 150 quests, and 25 gigantic caves and dungeons.
PvP is available for those who wish to fight other players, with several areas off limits to PvP for the protection of newer players. Though if you die to another player in PvP you will lose up to one percent of your experience points. Expansions: T4C is a fully supported product with version upgrades distributed by Vircom to liscenee's. Comments: If your looking to host your own MMORPG these guys have done all the work for you, as they have created a game engine which they allow you for a nominal fee to license the software for use on your own servers. If your looking to get rich with little startup dream on. Upfront Vircom states that this is for those who want to offer something more to companies with services already being provided.
After a few hours we were utterly bored to tears. It really depends upon the company who is hosting a server. Make sure they have an active community, they interact with the player base, and that most importantly there are other players in the game. We played on a barren server; it was the NPC's and us for two hours, not another pixilated soul in sight. We logged out and never went back. If you know of a supported server where something near the server max of 250 other players is, tell us. We'd really like to take a look. Discuss: |
