Previews: Lineage
Developer: NCsoft (Asia), NC Interactive (N.America) Publisher: NCsoft (Asia), NC Interactive (N.America) Genre: Fantasy Released: 08/10/98 Advancement System: Class/Levels Player vs. Player Combat: Non-PvP and PvP Servers Competitors: Ultima Online, EverQuet, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot. "Begin The Adventure!" Lineage is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the fantasy world of Aden, where players take on one of four roles as either a Knight, Wizard, Prince/Princess or an Elf. Each class has it's own distinct abilities from each other. Of note though is the Prince/Princess class as these are the ones that can maintain a Pledge. Within Lineage, player's gather together with friends and form a Blood Pledge, plotting strategies and pooling resources to take over one of six medieval castles or forts within the game world. Once the castle is yours, you have a choice to fix taxation rates for your kingdom. Rule with an iron fist? Or lead compassionately? Choose quickly, because there is always another Blood Pledge planning your overthrow!
Following three years after it's release, in an attempt to get a foothold in the North American market Lineage and it's subsidiary company NCInteractive came to the United States through a partnership with Richard "Lord British" Garriot of Destination Games (formerly OSI and the Ultima franchise) and creating an event marking the return of Lord British to the world of online gaming. Joining Richard Garriot are many well known team members of the past to bring Lineage to the mainstream, of note are: Starr "Lord Blackthorn" Long, Susan "Leilo" Kath, and Dwight "Melantus" Spaulding all who place a value on supporting a game community and what it entails.
None Comments: During server drops in the old days of Ultima Online's release attempting to play Atlantic, Augurer from the Shadow Alliance guild introduced Lineage to us. A game still in beta where language and nationality barriers made a difference. If you were an American expect to be pk'ed. This made it a very interesting game if you enjoyed PvP, all you had to do was announce you were American or enter text messages in English within game and soon you would be on the end of a gankfest. Like it's western counterparts in the gaming market, Lineage also had its share of corrupt staff. What always comes to mind though is an article that was printed by Time/CNN where those who played Lineage did not just PvP in game, but they took gaming to the extreme and would PK in real life, giving a whole new meaning to player killers.
Lineage's U.S. version is on the fast track slowly gaining momentum, the question is, can Richard “Lord British” Garriot bring the success of Ultima Online with this game on name recognition alone, when there are so many other titles coming out. For those looking for a traditional and simple game not bogged down by 3d graphics, where the "play is the thing," then here is a game worth checking out. Even is just in passing until something else comes along. Discuss: |
