Previews: Ultima Online
Developer: Origin Publisher: Electronic Arts Genre: Fantasy Released: 09/29/97 Advancement System: Profession/Skills Player vs. Player Combat: Yes (restricted w/options) Competitors: EverQuest, Asheron's Call. "We build worlds." The first of the new era in gaming, based on the Ultima settings created by Richard Garriott allowing thousands of players to interact simultaneously in an online persistent world. The most versatile game to date where players develop their character's using a skill-based system in a graphical game.
Continuing to lead in the market today with regular updates and expansion's, which allow and include more features to the game. Many of the games today follow the lead, as Ultima was the pioneer into the massively multi-player market with their innovative game attempting to create what it is that attracts players. Expansions: (UO: T2A) The Second Age (10/00/98) added a new landmass to game, new creatures and new items, with a special rules set to get to the new lands. (UO: R) UO Renaissance (04-12-00) repackaging of the original software which included the updates from T2A, creating a new land mass dividing the current game world between two lands, Felluca and Trammel as well as new housing options.
(UO: LBR) Lord Blackthorns' Revenge (02/13/01) working with Todd McFarlane, Lord Blackthorns' Revenge introduces 30 new creatures, added skills, more items, access to a new area and removes the restricted access areas from Third Dawn available to those still running a 2d Client. Comments: Ultima has withstood the test of time to create one of the more enjoyable games in the market place today based upon their open-ended skill set for character advancement. Playing the profession of a bard one-week and wish to change your character to a warrior is not an issue and one of the greater strengths of this game. Offering player housing, guild wars, options for pvp'ers and role-players alike.
Looking to pvp? UO has several options available from guilds declaring war upon other guilds, to joining knights of virtue in support of either Chaos or Order to taking part in factions, which can control towns. Care to be a craftsman or a merchant opposed to being a warrior. These options are also available to the player base. You get to choose what you wish to be, and can develop your professional path within game as you choose. Don't like what your profession is. Easily recreate your character with the open ended skill set provided. Discuss: Comments may agree or disagree |
