Special Sections: Gen Con '02

We are now confirmed gamer-geek-dork-fan-boys this far into the Con leaving no stone unturned! We are drooling over Booth Babes, Costumed Hotties, Guests of Honor, and of course games! Running booth-to-booth to look at just about everything, we stumbled to a halt when we ran into the following vendors continuing with the invasion we started on the last page!

This is the third part of our GenCon Journal, both part one and part two have already been printed for you to enjoy.

Invasion '02! pIII - Div Devlin (08-11-02)

Much better then Firiona!
EverQuest was running their second annual “Gladiator Tournament” which was a much larger booth from last year. Fully set up they had four gaming stations, where three pc's were hooked up for players to go toe-to-toe against one another, while allowing crowds of spectators to gather round and watch the battles on large screen monitors on three sides of their booth.

In three days of competition, players went head to head to become a champion. Winners would receive a one-year free subscription to EverQuest and Gladiator Championship Rings for their play character, as well as their picture with "The Gladiator" in the Ring of Champion's section of the EQ Gen Con 2002 web page.

We guess the new EQ Booth Babe is "The Gladiator" because she sure wasn't Firiona Vie and a lot hotter then Firiona to boot! Check out her angry look! We have absolutely no idea who won the event, as were like an indie site that's below the standards of EQ folks to associate with, so we knew when we were not wanted.

We did make it back though to see the Sony guys buff up characters (which takes a damn long time also) for a 3vs3 PvP match against Kurtis “Zelnik” Buckmaster and Chris “Vosx” Mancil from UbiSoft with a ringer they pulled in.

The setup!

The UbiSoft guys got owned hard; Zelnik did take one of the Sony guys down though.

Eve Online: The Second Genesis was being showcased by Simon and Schuster Interactive and let me just say, these guys know how to draw you in. Not only can they hype the game, it's a great looking game, which also has PvP in space! This is what a sci-fi mmog should be all about.

Rokin grabbed the first look at the game and writes the following.
Grabbing and empty chair I sit down next to Jo-el to allow him to give me a run down on the game and wait for Mr. Wallis to show back up (hard for even the presenters to stick in a booth at GenCon, just to much to look at). All of the screenshots that can be found on this game are not doctored, they are the real deal folks and that's exactly how they look in game. The animation was fluid as was the camera motions; hell everything was so fluid you would have thought you were looking at a CGI presentation. The interface is simple but being used to fantasy style interfaces it was a little foreign to me, but that won't be a problem in the long run. Movement, camera, and just about everything else can be handled with the mouse with ease. The transition of games from the keyboard control to the mouse control often hasn't been done very well. Eve will show how it should be done.

What gets me is that this game is still in Alpha testing and it looks like it should be more along the lines of being released next week. I asked when beta would start and was told they hope to have 10,000 players in beta in three weeks. The main goals for beta are to add more functions for corporations and handle any balancing problems that may arise that have not already been fixed. Already the options that can be made by a player are great and will only expand. If political intrigue is your cup of tea, fear not because Eve will be ripe with this sort of game play. An instance that was discussed at the demo was the maneuvering of miners and corporations with pricing of goods.
You can check out Rokin's full glimpse in his original write up and I agree that this game is going to set a new standard for the sci-fi community. I sat down with Mike “Campion” Wallis for a Q&A session about the game, and he won me over. For everyone who is tired of the Fantasy Genre and wants PvP in space, this is the game for you.

Next up: Ten questions with Campion!
Discuss: Sony over Ubi; Eve looking hot!
