Special Sections: Gen Con '02
Shadowbane the mmo game being developed by Wolfpack Studio's has long been hailed as the game for the PvP Community. Guild vs. Guild Warfare in a game structured for large-scale battles. Ubi Soft had a booth at GenCon '02. We checked them out. We like what we saw.
Read on young Padawan.
About that Bane Thing! - Div Devlin (08-12-02)

No bull about it!
We have been following Shadowbane for almost three years now and met the team at E3 in 2000. Last year at GenCon, Ubi Soft became the N. American publisher a week before the Con. We were very disappointed to say the least last year with the Ubi Soft booth at GenCon, as they had no coverage of Shadowbane. Kurtis "Zelnik" Buckmaster said to us, that this GenCon would not be a let down for the Shadowbane fans. He did not lie.
Chris "Vosx" Mancil made the announcement that Ubi Soft would be showing Shadowbane at this year's GenCon and we were waiting. Joined with Kurtis "Zelnik" Buckmaster from Ubi Soft, John "Nodster" Billington from Ubi Soft, Sam "Meridian" Johnson and Jason "Tangent" Durall from Wolfpack Studios; the Shadowbane booth dominated the convention in our eye's from the other MMO titles being presented.
In a space too small to accommodate them (a running theme of the Convention Center and a common complaint of all the exhibitors) the Shadowbane booth became the place to be. Having 6 computers set up (3 PC's and 3 Mac's) all running demo's of the game with live beta test accounts they showcased the game to one and all.

Everyone get's a turn!
We sat down for a short time and played for a bit. While you could use the pre-made character's they had created for the demo's, I cheated and made my own, don't tell them. Character creation is simple and elegant. Choose your race, a class to play, then tailor your class with proficiencies, fine tune your stat's (be wary as you can lose a proficiency if you fall under the required stat) and choose how your avatar will look, including what weapon you may start out with, and log into the game. We went with an Ireki Archer and we were having a lot of fun. It's not a forever leveling type game. Within ten minutes of tracking down some mobs with an overhead map we hit second level without a death. Archers rock, it's been a long time since we have had a decent game to not nerf archers to hell. I did make that classic pulling mistake and died with two mobs on me. I logged after that.
This was also the live beta servers that other players who are already in Beta are playing on. It was cool to see them inside running around. For the skeptics there are real players inside testing! Many names known from the Community as well!

It's really not that hard! Proof!
The game looks good also, while many complain about out-dated graphics on other sites, for me, it's not about the eye-candy. I could care less if a game looks good or not, to me it's all about the playability. If people are having issues with the way the game looks, it is not due to the game. Mayhap you need a new video card young student. The game looked good. I, as many others were a little confused over the mouse movement though and after playing NeverWinter Nights found the mouse movement not that irritating. You click a spot and run to it. I'd prefer to keep my mouse button down and change path's as I see fit. It's a UO thing, I'm sure. The camera rotation can make one a little dizzy though if you are hung-over. Other then that, I'm hyped again on the game.
As more specific-fan-sites have coverage of the game I'll move on to the booth and people that were there. As said above, Ubi Soft out did themselves, and know how to market to crush. The Shadowbane booth quickly became the place to be as Meridian would expand upon the lore of the game, Tangent would pose with all the babes, and Klingon's would come to imprison Vosx over the Shadowbane beta registration sign. Like the other exhibitor's handing out beta account's for their games, people could check Shadowbane out for themselves and then after getting hooked sign up for a beta account. One war-gamer after checking the game out for himself declared that this was an MMO he would definitely pay to play as we quote:"Cool! I don't have to build diorama's and paint buildings anymore"

Tangent, Zel, Vosx, Div, J & Rokin!
After he learned that in Shadowbane you can build and siege entire cities built by other players.
Once Vosx wussed out and had his boss free him from the Klingon jail, the sign was changed which made this Klingon happy. Don't piss off Star Trek fans when their Guest of Honor blows them off, we grabbed him for an interview all about Shadowbane.
Bonus Footage: Donelle and Tangent with Mrs. Zal and Zalaster!
Thanks for the brownies Mrs.Zal, they rocked!
Next: Interrogating Vosx on Shadowbane!
Discuss: No, I am not that short!
