GenCon '04
Guests of Honor and Gurps Online
GenCon is the traditional paper gaming grand exhibition which has been going on for over 30 years in the Midwest, where gamers and game companies meet for all things gaming. From across the country gamers descended upon the "Crossroads of America" at the Indianapolis Convention Center as the convention was held this year from August 19th to the 22nd, it's been dubbed as the best four days in gaming. We agree!
This is the fifth part of our GenCon Recap where we feel important and hang with the Guests of Honor as well as hooking up with Steve Jackson Games to ask, "Gurps Online, What Happened?"
GenCon '04: Recap - Div Devlin (09-07-04)
Guests of Honor
What's a convention without a bunch of old school actors selling their autographs to support drastically reduced Hollywood lifestyles! Gen Con had their setup for both what we would consider their A brand and B brand actors and actresses all set up in rows meeting and greeting their fans, who would pop ten bucks for a handshake, picture and autograph.
So, that was probably pretty harsh. But pretty truthful, at least not everyone is actually that snobbish when trying to get us to separate our cash from our wallet and we had some of them really mess us up by actually being pretty personable!
| Where's My Man Twiki?
Gil Gerard who was best known for his role, as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was the first guy we ran into, and we had to stop and take a double take. Damn, did he get old! We had to make bets on if it was actually him or his stunt double taking his place at his booth. Growing up we were envious of this guy, as you know his character was tapping that ass of Wilma Deering.
| Where's Has The Time Gone?
Erin Gray who infatuated our minds at such a young age with her hot leather outfits as Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was just a booth away from her co-star. We secretly wondered if one of the two of them needed to be separated from one another and not have their booths located next to each other. She looks good still, and has matured well from the days of our infatuated youth.

| DO NOT PISS HIM OFF, EVAH!
Marc Singer is one really big dude who is scary. We grew up watching him as Donovan in V, the alien rat series that aired on NBC and in all three of the Beast Master movies. He also played in this great move called “If You Could See What I Hear.” Recommended watching if you've never seen it. This guy rocks and has to be one of the cooler folks at GenCon. He has no reservations about moving away from his booth to kneel down and spend time with kids who were handicapped and fans.
Everyone that talked to Marc Singer would get a personal handshake; he's a down to earth guy selling himself to his fans and is definitely old school. After seeing personally how cool he was, we were tempted to ask him if his sister Lori Singer was single and if he would introduce us, but as an older brother, he no doubt would of gone into Dar mode and pummeled us to death.
| Who Are You, Again?
Orli Shosan who no one knows who she is was one of the Jedi's in Episode II of Star Wars in the role of Shaak Ti. Man, what a gal stuck on herself. Were sorry no one knows who you are, and we asked you for a picture. What a bish!
| My Rank? Admiral.
Walter Koenig other wise known as Chekov from everything Star Trek was pretty laid back hanging with fans that would stop by and socialize with him. It must be hard as when we came up he was meeting and greeting fans and trying to sneak bites of his lunch from McDonalds. We didn't stay to bother him, as we know how important food is.
Richard Hatch as a damn cool guy. We got to jam with him, who will always be known to us as Captain Apollo from the original Battlestar Galactica series. We were able to share thoughts on the old series versus the new and how clueless Sci-Fi channel was with the re-imagining of the new series. While he tells us the cast and crew are some of the best people around we needed to know if they were going to do anything for him and his role from the original series? Perhaps cameo appearances?
| Damn cool guy.
Luckily for us he was able to share with us that the folks behind the show know how important the fans of the old series are and they are taking care of him. Could have fooled us though when Sci-Fi channel closed down the old message boards due to the negativity. He won't be doing any cameo appearances, but he just got back from shooting on the set where they have created a special character for him in which he will be in a recurring role. He wouldn't tell us what it was as the surprise factor counts, we have to watch! It would be uber if they gave him the Pegasus!!
Linda Blair is the original Exorcist gal. A role know doubt she hates for making her famous as that's all she is really known for from most of us, and it's played to the hilt. Sure, it's made her rich and she's gone with it, but there has to be times she really hates it. We ran into her opening day of the new movie, and we drooled.
| Too Hot, She's Evil.
Hey, she looks good, she smells good, and she can jam! While at the con greeting fans she was also promoting her charity the Linda Blair World Heart Foundation about animal and human welfare of which she is the President and Founder. Since '84 she's been actively involved in animal rights and causes educating the public about animal and human cruelty. Check out her foundations website and donate to a worthy cause! You can even get all misty eyed as you read some of the inhumane treatment done to animals if you are nor really an uncaring son-of-a-bitch. Damn you, we know we are, but we still donated, and you should too!
She gets our prize as best Guest of Honor this year at GenCon!
Gurps Online
Steve Jackson Games was in full force and had an impressive display for all their games, but what we wanted to know was, "Has Gurps Online been cancelled?" Talk about opening up a great conversation. With the recent cancellation of Warhammer Online and the overwhelming response to Dungeons and Dragons Online we got to talk with reps from SJG who offered us reassurance that the game has not been cancelled, and is still under development. Per one of the reps, "Steve Jackson is personally interested in the MMP scene and is fully committed to entering the electronic market. Gurps Online is a great franchise to not have Massive Play." We agree. With the two first settings being the Wild West and Outer Space, everyone is interested, especially since these two markets have not be oversaturated, and allow for players to go cross-dimensional.
Next: Groovin' to Midnight Syndicate, Paizzo Publishing, SWG:JTL and V:tM
Back: EverQuest II and something just "For The Guys"
Discuss: Gurp. Blair is Hot.
