Biggest Changes This Week
For this week, we are focusing our attention on Rogues, the current top DPS class.
Rogue
Rogues have consistently been one of the top performers in Mists of Pandaria so far. At the start of the Phase, Subtlety was dominating. After a nerf and a bug fix, Assassination finds itself at the very top of the rankings, beating not only all DPS specs, but also all tanks in the age of Vengeance.
We asked our newest Guide Writer, Apoc1994, to provide some context as to why Rogues are doing so well right now.
Even with the recent buffs, Combat is still lagging a bit behind the other specs. This is likely due to a combination of players gearing more toward the other specs, especially when it comes to weapons, but also because very few players are willing to commit to Combat so far. For every 1 Combat Rogue, there are 10 playing Sub, and 20 playing Assassination. Currently, as is expected, Combat is the performing well, and even sometimes the top spec on fights that focus on cleave damage, like Sha of Fear. According to sims, Combat should perform roughly equal, or even slightly ahead of the other specs on single target, but time will tell.
While the lowest sim DPS, Subtlety is also the spec players are most familiar with. Combine this with strong weapons in Spiritsever, and their short cooldowns being less punishing, Subtlety remains a competitive spec, and even outperforms the other specs on more volatile fights like Lei Shi.

Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the Terrace of Endless Spring, Heart of Fear, & Mogu’shan Vaults Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs. We will examine the data for the 95th percentile and show the overall results to paint a better picture.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the current state of class balance for Mists of Pandaria Phase 1, meaning this is an incomplete picture of Mists of Pandaria balance.
We refer to perspective, as there are inherent biases in examining the data in this way.
- Specs considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are.
- This happens as many performance-oriented players tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing the gap between top and bottom specs even further.
- Position of specs for the 95th percentile might be skewed by alternative strategies and parse funneling. We’re including the chart showing all percentiles’ results to paint a better picture for all specs.
- Statistics displayed below show data for 25-player heroic difficulty. For 10-player difficulty, please visit Warcraft Logs.
