What is Sanctification
Sanctification is a system that randomly modifies an item to grant bonuses, but the downside is that items become unmodifiable and untradeable. Some of the outcomes can change the item in ways that either do nothing for the build or even make the item worse, so players will need to get duplicates of an item to truly “perfect” it.
Sanctifying Items costs a new crafting currency called Heavenly Sigils. It is currently unknown what the best place will be to farm them. Blizzard has stated that they are guaranteed drops from Bartuc in Infernal Hordes, and the Belial Lair Boss Encounter, as well as Astaroth from Nightmare Dungeon Escalations.
All Sanctification Outcomes
Currently, it is only known how Sanctification can modify an item, and specific outcomes from Sanctification are not known. Below are some examples of Sanctified Items Blizzard showed off. Sanctified additions are marked with a small wing icon similar to the icons added through tempering.
- Add a bonus special Sanctification Affix
- Replace an existing Affix with a special Sanctification Affix
- Add a Legendary Aspect
- Make the Item indestructable
While none of these outcomes make the item unusable, there are far better and worse outcomes. Notably, the “replace affix” outcome has the opportunity to remove a very impactful affix from an item, for example, the ranks to an ability, critical strike chance, or other niche build-empowering stats. Replacing a good affix with a bad affix has the potential to “ruin” an item, requiring players to farm a new copy.
Other outcomes are simple upsides, but might not have a direct impact. Making an item indestructible will not impact most players, as it will only reduce the gold cost to repair. Similarly, there are legendary aspects that might not do anything for a particular build. In this case, the item is functionally “unchanged”.
